Abortion on Demand
George W Bush opposes the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand and supports legal protection for unborn children. Al Gore supports the 1973 Supreme Court Roe v Wade decision that legalized abortion on demand. He has stated, "As president, I would do nothing to undermine the Roe v Wade decision."
Government Funding of Abortion
George W Bush opposes using tax dollars to pay for abortion. Al Gore supports using tax dollars to pay for abortion.
Record
George W Bush supported and signed a parental notice law in Texas requiring a parent to be notified before a minor child could undergo an abortion. Bush also supported and signed a law protecting access to life-saving medical care for vulnerable patients. Al Gore voted 31 out of 33 times with the pro-abortion/pro-choice side during his 8 years in the Senate. Gore voted repeatedly against requiring that organizations that receive federal funds notify one parent before performing an abortion on a minor child. Gore also voted to require military facilities to provide abortion on demand.
Supreme Court Appointments
George W Bush will appoint judicial conservatives to the Supreme Court who will strictly interpret the Constitution according to its text and history. Al Gore stated, "... rest assured that a Supreme Court majority appointed in a Gore administration would support a woman's right to choose."
